What are research peptides?

“Research peptides” is a general term for short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks as proteins, just shorter — that are manufactured for use in laboratory and preclinical research rather than for human consumption. The compounds covered on this site (NAD+, glutathione, DSIP, and GLP-1) each have a distinct research history, mechanism, and evidence base, which is why we cover them individually rather than as a single category.

What do NAD+ research findings show?

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme with two well-established core roles: as an electron carrier in the metabolic pathways cells use to generate ATP, and as a required substrate for sirtuin enzymes, which has driven substantial research interest in cellular aging and metabolism. What do glutathione research studies cover?

Unlike most compounds on this site, glutathione is produced endogenously in essentially all human tissue, with particularly high concentrations in the liver. Research on it centers on its role as the body’s primary intracellular antioxidant — neutralizing reactive oxygen species and serving as a cofactor for detoxification enzymes. What is DSIP research about?

DSIP (delta sleep-inducing peptide) was first identified in blood drawn from rabbits during electrically induced delta-wave sleep, and is named for that original association. The available research is older and smaller in volume than for many other peptides, and has looked at possible neuromodulatory activity and HPA-axis interactions, without a firmly established receptor. What is GLP-1 and why is it studied?

GLP-1 is a peptide hormone released from cells in the small intestine and colon after nutrient intake. It’s one of the most-studied hormone systems in modern metabolic research, largely because of its glucose-dependent effect on insulin secretion — it prompts insulin release specifically when blood glucose is elevated, which carries a research interest in a lower inherent hypoglycemia risk relative to other insulin-secretion pathways.
